The next wave of patches for Ubisoft Montreal's Far Cry 2 will bring a new "hardcore" multiplayer setting to the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 open-world shooter.

"The hardcore mode has been designed as an answer to a community request," Ubisoft community developer Atmon wrote on the game's official forums. "Some players were seeking and expecting a more realistic experience. "

The changes will be available in every multiplayer mode, bringing:

  • A new damage model will be applied with increased damage for all weapons.
  • All weapons have been rebalanced on normal mode, and on hardcore mode.
  • Enemy names will disappear after the spawning invincibility period is over (A shield is displayed above a player’s head for a few second to show that he is invincible).
  • A new option will allow you to tweak spawning time (but not spawning rate).
  • A new search option will be available in multiplayer to allow you to find games that are playing on hardcore mode.

No word yet as to when the actual patch will arrive.

Killzone 2 Weapons

Posted by lakerman | 9:33 AM | | 0 comments »

It will have been over four years since the release of the original Killzone when Killzone 2 hits retail shelves in February 2009. In that stretch of time, PlayStation owners have endured delay after delay in hopes of one day finally getting the opportunity to sit down with the highly anticipated title in order to take down one Helghast at a time. One of the key components to taking down this dastardly enemy of mankind is the weaponry you’ll be equipped with. We’ve taken the time to display the known weapons for Killzone 2.

First up is the standard issued ISA Assault Rifle. It won’t come as a shock if this ends up being your main weapon of combat throughout the game, but we’re hoping that this time around Guerilla Games gives us a little bit larger magazine clip to work with. Hopefully, as displayed below, that added clip of ammo will be used as an extra source of ammunition that will give you a quicker reload and more bullets to spray paint across the battlefield. We can also speculate that because of the green scope attachment, this Assault Rifle is also packaged with the grenade launcher much like the similar scope was packaged with that rifle in the original title.

This brings the Machine Gun up next, which happens to be looking like an altered version of the M249 SAW. While this option will come packed with more rounds at a faster rate, we’re sure the damage potential will be much lower than that of the Assault Rifle. Not to mention the recoil, if done realistically, should create a bit of inaccuracy in comparison as well. Though users will probably give up damage for a faster rate of fire, this would be your obvious second choice for your primary weapon.

Add ImageA new addition to the Killzone Gun Club is the Revolver (Featured in Liberation, but not the original Killzone). Oddly, this handgun was left out of the original title from what we can gather, but found its way into the sequel. We’re hoping that the revolver just happens to punch a nice amount of damage behind that beautiful kickback. If we look at the revolver within other games, we can take delight in knowing what type of stopping power this little package can deliver. Here’s to hoping the Helghast are poorly prepared for its punch.

Below, you’ll notice a miscellaneous rifle that we’re not quite sure on what it could be. From what we gather, it is quite similar to the Assault Rifle/Shotgun combination from the original Killzone – minus the red scope. If this is the case, it’s good to know that this dual-purposed weapon will be made available to users in the game once more. This was by far our favorite weapon in Killzone and we’re glad it is potentially making its return. This gun is sure to be the most efficient not only in distance-based combat, but in close-quarters battle as well.

This little SMG-esque gun (A replica of the PP 19 Bizon SMG) is new to the franchise much like the Revolver. We’ve done our digging around and can’t find anything eerily similar to the style nor the design. We understand the game has undertaken a huge redesign since the original title, but it still leave zero resemblance like other guns we’ve mentioned already. Our best bet is this is just a standard two-handed SMG that will allow you to drop the Helghast to the floor in quick succession.

The Rocket Launcher looks like a real nice piece of work in Killzone 2. As shown below, we’re hoping this bad boy destroys as great as it looks. As in any game, the rocket launcher is used with no caution and only complete destruction is relevant. We can only imagine how the rag doll physics will send Helghast flying after taking a pill poppin’ from one of these bad boys.

The last type of Rifle displayed throughout the trailers thus far is the single-shot rifle below. This high-impact rifle is sure to do some damage no matter where it hits you. We're sure this will be the weapon of choice for a variety of gamers and we look forward to firing off a few rounds for ourselves come February. We’ve obviously saved the best weapon for last. The Shotgun -- now we understand we said the dual-rifle/shotgun was our favorite weapon of all, unfortunately, when it comes to just a standard equipped gun, nothing beats the shotgun on its own. Moving through corridors and weaving through close-quarter combat, it’s always great fun to watch the enemy take a shell to the chest and go flying in reverse. Mowing down one Helghast at a time, the trusty sidekick of the Assault Rifle should leave any ISA Soldier proud to be at war.

I cant wait to find out first hand about these and other weapons available. There is also a bolt gun which shoots exploding ammunition and a devastating looking flamethrower, both of which can be viewed in the video below.

Killzone 2 Class System

Posted by lakerman | 6:47 PM | | 0 comments »

The Killzone 2 multiplayer uses a class system similar to Half-Life: Team Fortress 2. There are 8 classes with 7 having special abilities in the form of badges. These badges can be mixed to customize the users playing style.

Rifleman

The default class when a primary badge is not selected although a secondary badge may be used. The rifleman can start with all but specialized weaponry.

Engineer

The engineer's primary badge ability is to set up automated turrets that target enemies.

The secondary badge ability repairs turrets, ammo dumps , and mounted guns.

Medic
The medic's primary badge allows him to heal downed team mates.

The secondary badge allows the medic to throw health packs for their team.

Scout

The scout's primamry ability is to use a cloak rendering the player nearly invisible.

The secondary badge allows the player to tag enemies with hidden markers to give their locations to team mates.

Assault

The assault class badge gives the user armor that is twice as strong as regular armor.

The secondary badge can temporarily boost running speed.

Tactician

The primamry badge allows the player to creat spawn points in the form of colored smoke grenades.

The secondary badge allows the player to call in air support from a sentry bot.

Saboteur

The primary badge allows the player to be disguised as an enemy .

The secondary badge alows the player to throw a proximity activated explosive charge.

Heres a look at the campaign mode for the highly anticipated Killzone 2, which will be coming to ps3's everywhere in Febuary 09.

Far Cry 2 Review

Posted by lakerman | 2:43 PM | | 0 comments »

Just remembering the past greatness of the original Far Cry, I had to give this game a shot. Far Cry 2 is no doubt a good game that may just change the face of future FPS games to come. Far Cry 2 tries to stand out in a crowd unlike some other games I wont' mention that are the same old thing year after year.

As much as I like some of the features of this game, I think it could definitly use some updates to change a few aspects of the game. Most of the issues I have with it lie in the multiplayer part of the game, which if you've read my other posts already know that is whats most important to me.

One issue I find annoying(especially in multiplayer) is that you have to unload a full clip into most people before they drop. Another is that after every ranked match the game ends and you have to go find a new match, which can be a whole other issue in itself. Player matches do not disconnect after a match but you loose your upgraded weapons every time you leave the game.

There also seems to be a problem with the saving of diamonds causing people to lose some weapons they've earned in multiplayer, which can be frustrating as I found this out the hard way.

Hopefully these issues will be taken care of by the developer ubisoft, but I won't hold my breath as they dont have the best reputation for fixes. I will admit that I haven't played the game in some time so maybe these issues have been addressed already. Hopefully they have been and I will be able to edit this post to something much more favorable.

It's funny how some simple flaws can really affect the overall opinions of the game. Far Cry 2 comes so close to being that must have FPS game but just lacks some of the refinement that you get from say a Call of Duty game, where you know that most issues will be fixed.

Now putting the trash talk to the side ,this games does some really cool things. For example , the map maker is awesome and will hopefully be a staple in future FPS titles. All the more reason for ubi to make sure there are no problems with the multiplayer. I think I have spent more time messing with the map maker than I have actually playing the game.

For someone with the time and creativity, the possibilities are endless. One memorable example was a map made by someone which includes the Millenium Falcon from Star Trek or another featuring the Eiffel Tower. For those less talented or time constricted people there are houses and buildings that can be placed wherever you want them as well as tons of other objects. One day I'll have the time to finish the maps I started so I can post where to find them.

I think it's such a great feature that adds so much to the replay value and lets gamers put their own little touches into the game. I know I'm not the only one tired of waiting and paying for new maps.

If you can get past some of the multiplayer problems, there definitely is a good time to be had as the maps are large and beautiful and there are some fun and destructive ways to kill.
For example the physics(explosive) items can be fun, like gas cannisters that fly all over the place when shot setting fire to anything in it's path.

The fire in the game is awesome and the brush burns both beautifully and vigorously spreading as it burns. The fire isn't the only great looking thing, the graphics throughout are very nice, however I do feel the character models could have been better. This is definitly one of the best looking games so far to hit the PS 3, with environments the are right up there with Uncharted and really make you feel a part of the African wilderness.

The sounds are excellent as well, and all the guns sound great. Far better than some of the gun sounds I heard from the Call of Duty World at War campaign.

Another really cool feature happens when you get injured and you have to find cover to heal your wounds. When you press the heal button there is an animation of you either pulling a bullet from you tattered wound or doing some other visually horific act to heal yourself.

While I think the singleplayer is an interesting idea and some will love it, it's not for everyone. The missions are presented in a sand box manner a la GTA, which adds many options to the way you handle tasks. Some may like to sneak from place to place while others just drive through checkpoints with guns blazing.

While some may like the driving others just dont have the patience as sometimes you have to go through a few checkpoints. It does get a bit tedious going through chechpoints only to have the guards respawned 5 minutes later. But for those who like a little thinking and strategy mixed in with their led slinging this game is the way to go.

Theres a long list of weapons to terrorize enemies with like mortars and an m-16 like automatic shotgun. Weapons have to be unlocked and purchased from several weapon dealers that all happen to look exactly the same and send you on what are basically the same side missions.Your purchasing power comes from diamonds that you find via a flashing light on your gps.

I feel I need to advise anyone that plays this game not to give up in the first hour or so because it really can be frustrating and slow at first but the game does get much better. Over all this is a game that is definitly worth a rent to see how you like it.
